The Iron Shall Make You Free

Consistent resistance training is one of the best ways for both men and women to improve their health. Routine resistance training will promote chronic, healthy adaptations in your body.

Resistance Training vs. Cardio Training:

Most people associate vigorous cardiovascular work, like running, as the best means for losing unwanted body fat. Prolonged running usually rates 12+ METs (exertion level from a scale of 1-20) and uses a lot of energy during exercise. Cardiovascular programs can develop some very beneficial, chronic health adaptations.

Free-weight resistance training is nowhere near as vigorous as a bout of prolonged cardiovascular exercise. It usually comes in at ~6 METs, burning only a moderate amount of energy during bouts of exercise. However, you will be developing anaerobic, type-II muscle fiber, as apposed to cardio’s aerobic, type-I muscle fiber. The focused development of larger type-II muscle fiber will greatly increase your resting energy expenditure (REE). In the end, you will metabolize, or ‘burn’, more total calories at rest for only half the exertion-investment of cardio-based training methods.

Also, it must be noted that many experience fat loss with resistance training even though they don’t lose weight, or may even gain weight. “Huh?” It’s true; there is a big difference between weight and fat loss. A change in body composition can be expected with resistance training, because a pound of muscle only has half the volume of a pound of adipose / fat tissue. Trading pounds of fat for like pounds of muscle will still result in a shrinking belly and waistline.

Resistance Training vs. Diet-Only:

Almost any health factor can be directly affected by diet. Fat loss is no exception. When a person eats more calories than they expend during the day, the extra energy is stored in the vacuoles of adipocyte cells as white adipose tissue (fat). Each pound of fat stored on a person’s body represents ~3,500K/calories of stored energy. If one consumes fewer calories in a day than they use up, then their body will tap into their white adipose (fat) reserves for fuel. If a person is consistently in a calorie deficit, they will consistently burn off fat…among other things.

As stated earlier, muscle mass has a higher resting energy expenditure than other body mass-types. When in a calorie deficit, the human body seeks homeostasis (equilibrium) and will take certain steps to achieve it. Since lean mass is high-maintenance and is not vital to self-preservation, it is catabolized (used as energy) right along with fat in order to fuel your body’s energy needs. Once a person comes off a diet-only program, they often experience a ‘yo-yo’ effect and gain the weight back, if not more than what they originally lost. This is because they lost lean mass, so their baseline metabolic rate is now lower than when they began dieting.

Regular resistance training will help a person maintain lean muscle mass, even in a calorie deficit. Regular overload of the skeletal muscle with resistance training signals to the body that the extra muscle is vital to homeostasis and self-preservation, and thus the body will more heavily rely on white adipose tissue (fat) for fuel. So when a person does resistance training coupled with specific types of calorie deficit diet strategies, they still have a high base-line metabolic rate after they come off the diet and have less risk of gaining the fat back.

Resistance Training vs. Mixed Training:

You may know what I’m getting at here. It’s the 400-pound gorilla in the fitness room. I can’t even use its name for fear of lawsuit. Fitness programs that combine high-intensity resistance training with timed endurance is probably the worst thing a person can do. The human body, when subjected to the two extremes of the fitness spectrum (anaerobic and aerobic stimuli) will always develop aerobic capacities. So what does that mean for the anaerobic, resistance training portion? Since the body cannot adapt to both, the excess stress on the body will quickly cause overtraining, which leads to injuries.

Traditional resistance training is better for hypertrophy (building muscle) and for fat loss. As explained in the first section, it is not as intense and therefore incurs less wear and tear on the body. It is very low-impact, sparing one’s joints. In total, traditional resistance training, when done properly and with good form, is safe, sustainable, and healthy.

In order to get the most out of resistance training, you need specificity. Settle on a specific fitness goal: muscular physique, raw strength, or perhaps a major weight-loss transformation. To realize your fitness goal, specific training methods must be applied for a prolonged period of time.
