Review:

“One of the things I always try to remind myself is that every-one has scars,” she says. “A lot of them even worse than mine. The only difference is that mine are visible and most people’s aren’t.”

Colleen Hoover is the boss of break your heart in pieces style modern romance novels. November 9 is a standalone novel from the beloved author, which was released back in 2015. Like many of Colleen Hoover’s titles, November 9 has seen plenty of renewed interest thanks to the rising popularity of this US writer on social media and TikTok. November 9 proved to be another bittersweet and damaging love story from Colleen Hoover.

A monumental modern romance with a literary twist, November 9 follows the life of a writer and former actress. Hoover introduces Ben, a young man who has dreams of becoming a writer. By chance, Ben is acquainted with Fallon, who is just about to embark on a huge move to the other side of the country. This fateful meeting sets in motion a connection that will cross time and place. Ben feels instantly inspired by Fallon’s presence and although their relationship is short lived, she ignites something special deep inside him. Fallon is Ben’s source of inspiration and after meeting this young woman he is motivated to finally complete his novel. Life continues to go on for Ben and Fallon, leaving in its wake plenty of changes. But a pact Ben and Fallon made continues to unite them once a year. However, Ben may have put his unique relationship with Fallon in jeopardy when she discovers the real reason for his annual meeting with her. Will this love script survive or is it destined to fail?

There is no denying the literary star power of Colleen Hoover. I can’t believe I didn’t catch on to her sooner. Since I started my first Hoover book at the start of the year I have been making my way through as many Colleen Hoover releases as I can. November 9 was a book I turned to as a beach buddy. I soon ripped through this one in just two sittings over the course of a day. Consuming, quirky and appealing, November 9 was classic Colleen Hoover.

The only thing I was a little unsure about with November 9 is the rather odd first meeting between the two leads. I noticed other reviewers have commented on this set-up too, noting it was a tad creepy. I felt a little bit unsettled by Ben’s initial spark with Fallon, which led me to take this book down a notch on the rating scale. However, once I got over this aspect of the tale, I liked the yearly set date catchups between the main characters. I liked the fact that November 9 has a writing and literary slant, this made the book very readable in my opinion as a strong book minded person. I could see this story playing out well in a movie, it had a distinct movie feel to it. There are moments that will upset and possible disturb you, but that’s what Colleen Hoover is all about!

Character wise, Hoover’s leads are quite young and I did feel a little distanced from them to be honest as a forty-something reader! However, the book advances in time to a few years after the first meeting, so by the close of the book Ben and Fallon have matured in many ways. November 9 is a story about family, love, loyalty, growth, healing, confidence, acceptance, forgiveness, redemption and believing in yourself. Hoover covers these themes with a knowing and perceptive eye. The love aspect of this tale was full of ups, downs, plateau moments and more.  Expect to feel emotionally tormented by the close of November 9, it’s what Colleen Hoover does best. Hoover pulls you one way and then she does a complete u-turn thanks to her killer plot twists. Don’t fear, a decent conclusion arrives by the close of November 9, making it a great moody romance.

A book about time, faith, support, choice, learning to love, believing in yourself, personal release, blame, fulfilment, standing up for your rights and following your dreams, November 9 is a hip modern romance from global megastar Colleen Hoover.
