Colman Domingo has revealed the surprisingly relaxed approach to dieting that helps him stay lean in his 50s – and it doesn’t involve strict calorie counting.

The Euphoria and Sing Sing star tells MH that while he still enjoys indulgent foods, he’s had to become more mindful about balance as he’s got older.

Coming from Philadelphia, he loves soul food and still has a particular penchant for the meatiest, cheesiest and greasiest varieties. When he was younger, that didn’t matter. Nowadays he has to be more selective with what he eats.

Domingo, 56, says his meals now ‘usually consists of meat or fish and vegetables’, though he still leaves room for treats – provided there’s a trade-off elsewhere.

‘I don’t count calories; I barter with them,’ he jokes.

The actor explained that his approach to fitness and nutrition shifted significantly after gaining weight while filming Netflix thriller The Madness. During production, his weight climbed to 205lb (14st 9lb) for the first time.

During the 2023 writers’ strike, Domingo reassessed his eating habits and began paying closer attention to his sugar, alcohol and carb intake.

‘I went back to work and I was much leaner than I was before,’ he says. ‘I can see it in the cuts. I know the difference of a scene where I was 205 and a scene where I’m 20lb lighter.’
