The 12 Best Dress Sneakers for Men, Tested by Style Editors
They're low-key, but super comfortable and stylish.
I’VE BECOME A big dress sneaker guy over the past few years—mostly because I’m constantly moving. On any given day, I’m running across the city to preview collections, standing around for hours on photoshoots, grabbing dinner after work, or squeezing in errands somewhere in between. Regular dress shoes just don’t cut it anymore. I still want something polished and put-together, but I also prefer the comfort of my favorite sneakers. That’s where dress sneakers come in.
Some look too sporty to wear with tailoring, while others feel stiff and clunky after an hour. So the Men’s Health fashion team and I tested over 50 pairs since 2021 to find the ones actually worth wearing. The best dress sneakers can be styled with tailored trousers for the office, dressed-down denim on the weekend, or even a blazer for dinner and drinks. They’re the rare shoes that genuinely work for almost every vibe and occasion.

What to Consider
Materials
The material is the first thing people notice, and it’s what gives dress sneakers their elevated edge. Premium full-grain leather offers a polished, refined look that pairs well with everything from suiting to chinos. Suede adds texture and a more laid-back, but still-luxe vibe—great for dressing down while still keeping things stylish. Look for soft, supple finishes that age well and are easy to clean. Bonus points for contrast paneling or a leather-suede mix, which adds depth without looking over-designed.
Silhouette
The shape of the sneaker is key. A low-profile is the most versatile—it reads modern without veering too sporty. Avoid bulky soles or overly technical designs. The sleeker the silhouette, the easier it is to pair with dressier pieces like trousers or blazers. Think streamlined laces, tight stitching, and minimal branding. You want something that blends in when needed but can still stand out when styled right.
Comfort Tech
EVA and Ortholite are two key players in dress sneakers that keep your feet happy when you’re on them all day—but they work a little differently, and together, they’re kind of a dream team.
EVA
Short for ethylene-vinyl acetate, It’s a lightweight, slightly springy foam you’ll find in the midsole. It’s designed to absorb impact, so every step feels softer on your joints. The foam also keeps the shoe feeling light, which is great for walking or standing for hours. Unlike rubber, it doesn’t weigh you down, and it gives you just enough bounce to keep your stride smooth.
Ortholite
Ortholite, on the other hand, is usually found in the footbed or insole. It has a high-rebound feel that holds its shape over time instead of flattening out after a couple wears. It also breathes better than standard foam, helping with temperature and moisture control, so your feet stay cooler and drier during long days.
How We Selected
As Men’s Heath’s Style editor, I’ve tested more than 50 sneakers in the past five years. I also consulted with our Style Director Christian Gollayan who put a number of dress sneakers through the wringer, such as wearing them to the office, formal events, and dinner parties. We evaluated these dress sneakers based on their style, comfort, price point, durability, and versatility. From monotone leather low-tops to hybrid dress shoes, it’s all here.
What Are Dress Sneakers?
The best dress sneakers are generally defined by having a uniform color, minimal detail, and higher end materials. Colors are usually in the same range as dress shoes, meaning brown, black, blue, or gray. The lone exception is white, since solid white sneakers pass for dressy, especially leather varieties. Uppers are usually leather or suede, but there are some fabric options that pass for formal. Soles can be flat or athletic, as long as they are a solid color that is complementary to the upper. Meaning that a brown or tan dress sneaker can have a white sole, and a black or gray dress sneaker can have a black or gray sole.
Some dress sneakers feature leather uppers that are identical to standard dress shoes, like a long wing brogue or a cap toe. These shoes enter sneaker territory by changing up the sole to an athletic design and can sometimes have other sneaker-like details, such as a padded ankle. You can even have a fabric upper that is designed to look like a dress shoe, but feel and perform like a sneaker.
How Do I Wear Dress Sneakers to Work?
Dress sneakers at work is totally doable—just have to keep it sharp. First rule: skip the athletic stuff. Go for minimal leather or suede sneakers—think Common Projects, Koio, or something sleek from Cole Haan. White, black, navy or tan are always a safe bet.
Match them with slim chinos or black jeans—no distressing, no sag. On top, throw on a crisp button-down or polo, maybe layer with a bomber, cardigan, or even an unconstructed blazer if you're feeling like a boss-level polished. Keep the colors coordinated, nothing too loud.
How Do I Clean Dress Sneakers?
While most athletic sneakers and canvas sneakers can be cleaned in a washing machine, that is almost never the case for dress sneakers. A little elbow grease and some simple products will be required. Which method you use depends on what material your dress sneakers uppers are made of. As for the soles, since they are pretty much all made out of rubber, you can wipe them clean with a wet washcloth and a little dish detergent.
Leather
Leather dress sneakers are the easiest to clean because most dirt, dust, and stains will wipe off with a wet towel. An old toothbrush works well for getting into cracks and crevices. For pesky marks, use a simple dish detergent like Dawn on a wet washcloth.
Suede
If you own any suede shoes, jackets, or accessories, then it is worth investing in a suede brush. You can find them on Amazon and they work wonders. Any dirt, dust, smudge, or scuff will rub right off. However, if this does not work and your suede has a set in stain, you will have to take it to a professional cleaners.
Textile
Any kind of textile upper can be cleaned with a wet towel and laundry detergent. Just wet the towel and dab a dime sized amount of detergent onto the towel, then scrub away. Use an old toothbrush to get into cracks and crevices. For set-in stains, you can use a stain treatment like Shout before cleaning.
