The Best Sandals for Men, Tested by Style Experts

The easiest way to beat the heat.

VerifiedReviewed by Style and Reviews Director

AS A STYLE EDITOR, I've learned that nothing quite captures summer like a great pair of sandals. The second you swap sneakers for sandals, every errand somehow feels like a scene from The White Lotus. And despite what some menswear snobs think, today’s best sandals don’t look like something your dad wore mowing the lawn in 2004. Over the past five years, our Men’s Health fashion team has tested over 50 of these summer shoes everywhere from beach vacations and city hikes, backyard BBQs, and long pool days. The 12 unique pairs that made our final list all bring something different to the table, but the best ones strike the same balance: comfort, versatility, and enough style to build outfits around.

Best Sandals for Men

What to Consider

Arch support

It helps maintain the natural alignment of your foot, providing stability and reducing the risk of strain or injury. The arch of the foot also acts as a shock absorber, supporting the body’s weight and absorbing impact during walking or standing. Without the proper support, the arch can collapse leading to discomfort, fatigue, and even conditions like plantar fasciitis or flat feet.

Look for sandals with contoured footbeds or built-in arch support. These features promote a natural arch shape and evenly distribute pressure across the foot. For men with high arches at the foot or those who spend prolonged periods on their feet, arch support is a must, not just a plus.

Fit

Opt for sandals with adjustable straps or closures to achieve a customized fit that feels secure and comfortable on your feet. These options should be less likely to slip off or cause tripping hazards while walking.

Upper Material

Look for materials that feel soft and comfortable against the skin such as leather or suede. You can even consider synthetic fabrics like nylon or mesh, which offer excellent breathability, and quick-drying properties, and are often more budget-friendly. Take into account the ease of cleaning and maintenance required for the material. Some may be more resistant to dirt and stains and easier to clean than others.

Outsole

When you're walking on slippery grounds or trailing on uneven terrains, the traction of your sandals' outsole will make or break your steps. Keep an eye out for sandals with rubber or non-slip outsoles, as they offer excellent grip and minimize the risk of slips or falls. We also recommend a textured outsole such as grooved or "teeth"-like since the design will really grip on any terrain condition. Flexible outsoles are also great for walking by allowing for natural foot movement.

How We Selected

To curate our list for the best sandals for men, Men's Health's editors and writers have personally tried on and tested a range of sandals over the past five years in different styles across a bunch of occasions. For instance, we’ve worn Teva’s strappy sandal on a hike, sported Banana Republic’s cross-strap sandal around a resort, and ran errands in Merrell’s closed-toe sandal. Then, our testing editors narrowed down the selection by evaluating these sandals based on their comfort, durability, fit and most importantly, versatility.

birkenstock

birkenstock

Pros

  • A firm, supportive arch footbed that molds to your feet
  • Outsole has a strong grip to provide more traction and stability when walking
  • Comfortable upper that doesn't dig into the skin
  • The more you wear, the more comfortable they get

Cons

  • A little pricey for a style that's so ubiquitous

Birkenstock’s OG sandal takes the crown on our best list because it's ridiculously comfy, easy to style, and built to last way longer than your average slip on. After years of testing, I wore it everywhere: breezing through the airport, strolling through the park, or racking up steps on vacation.

It’s made with oiled nubuck leather uppers, plus leather lining and insoles, which develops a natural patina that looks better over time. The one feature I’d be remiss to acknowledge is the cork-latex footbed. It slowly molds to your feet with cushy arch support and contouring that feels like you’re walking on sponges. And between the adjustable straps and deep heel cup, my foot always feels locked in, so I’m not sliding or wobbling.

Since the EVA sole feels light and flexible, I can comfortably sport it for hours on concrete and cobblestone like a champ. Just don’t wear the suede pair in the rain. For style editors like myself, this is the ultimate vacation sandal because it’s versatile enough to throw on for the beach, dinner and wandering around the resort. It pairs with anything from pleated trousers and a camp collar shirt to your favorite swim trunks.

Pros

  • Perfect for pool days and beach trips
  • Dries quickly
  • Super lightweight and packable
  • Hexagonal outsole adds solid traction on wet surfaces

Cons

  • Not the best option for dressier summer fits

Bombas is known for making comfortable socks for men, but we also love its waterproof sandals that can handle pool days, beach trips, or backyard barbecues. The fully molded EVA is what makes it such a great waterproof sandal: it dries quickly, won’t stay waterlogged, and feels super lightweight and packable. Underfoot, it feels soft and springy like a sponge without turning mushy, while the cupped footbed keeps your foot sitting securely in place too, so you’re not constantly gripping with your toes while walking.

The hexagonal outsole adds solid traction around wet surfaces, so I won’t slip and fall if I chase my nephew around the pool deck. Outside of wet environments, it’s a great slip-on for dog walks or wearing around the house after long days on your feet. The only downside is that the sporty molded design doesn’t look quite as elevated with dressier summer outfits.

Brazil Flip Flop Sandal

Pros

  • Cushioned footbed sandals with rice patterns will keep you from slipping
  • Looks great with baggy shorts
  • Promote the Brazilian spirit with colors and country flag on the straps

Cons

  • Not the best to wear for hours of walking

Over the last couple years, Havaianas’ flip flops have become cool again, thanks to luxury brands sending elevated thong sandals down the runway. In summer 2025, I first sported mine in St. Kitts, where I spent most of my time in the sand and on the resort. Thanks to the rice patterns on the footbed, I didn’t slip at any moment. The slim profile and minimalist strap design make them look far sleeker than the average bulky beach flip-flop, especially with baggy shorts or wide-led trousers paired with a loose tank top.

While the rubber sole feels soft and comfortable, I probably wouldn’t wear them for an entire day of heavy walking since minimal footbed and thong strap can start chafe after serious mileage. Still, the Brazilian-inspired details—like the country’s national flag along the straps and colors in the sole—make it feel cooler than your average gas station flip flops.

Alo Unisex It Slide

Unisex It Slide

Pros

  • Cloud-like cushioning
  • Suitable for coffee runs, dog walks, and pool days
  • Feel like a relief after a long day on your feet

Cons

  • Not the best option for casual outfits—more for around the house

After a hard workout or long day on my feet, Alo’s slide-sandal is the pair I slip into. I find its cloud-like EVA insole feels like a burst of relief. Plus the rubber sole gives a solid grip on slick floors after stepping out of a gym shower. I also like the padded strap that keeps the top of your foot comfortable without rubbing. It’s comfy as can be with plenty of rebounding support with a clean, minimal style. Aside from recovery, I’ve mostly been wearing mine on morning coffee runs and long pool days with my shorts or trunks, but it’s one of my go-to house sandals whenever my feet need a break.

Fisherman Sandal

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Polished enough to wear with a number of looks
  • Adjustable buckle keeps the fit secure

Cons

  • Suede construction could get ruined in the rain

Like flip flops’ meteoric rise, the fisherman sandal is having a moment, thanks to the ugly-cool trend pushed by luxury brands like Prada and The Row. Vinny’s take leans especially refined, with a woven suede upper and closed-toe design that make it far easier to dress up than most sandals. It gives you breathability while still looking polished enough to wear with loose trousers, tailored shorts, or even a relaxed summer suit.

I’ve been wearing mine with wide-leg pants lately, but they also look surprisingly good with white socks. The tradeoff is that the suede construction requires a little babysitting—you definitely don’t want to wear them in the rain or beat them up at the beach. Despite the luxe look, there’s barely any break-in period, so they feel comfortable right out of the box. Plus, the adjustable buckle closure keeps the fit secure. Sure, this pair has the highest price tag, but it delivers the richest, most fashion-forward look of the bunch.

Keen Uneek Sandals

Keen Uneek Sandals

Pros

  • Braided cord design flexes to your foot
  • Airy, almost barefoot feel with exposed upper
  • Easy to tighten for a custom fit
  • Suitable for a bunch of summer settings

Cons

  • May not work with tailored fits

This is easily one of the most versatile sandals you can own because it works for way more situations than you’d expect: poolside barbecues, beach trips, walking around town, or even light hikes thanks to the grippy outsole. Instead of stiff straps, the braided cord design flexes and moves with your foot, giving the sandal an airy, almost barefoot feel while still feeling secure.

You can tighten the cords for a more customized fit too, which makes them especially great if your feet swell in the heat or after long days outside. The footbed offers excellent arch support and cradles the natural contours of the feet. And because they’re washable, you never really have to baby them. Just rinse them off and keep going. The outdoorsy gorpcore look may not work with tailored fits, but that’s part of what makes them such an easy everyday summer beater.

Vegan Leather Crossover Sandal

Pros

  • Easy to pack without bulk
  • Crossover strap design makes it feel more elevated
  • Accommodating for wider feet

Cons

  • Only comes in two colors

Banana Republic’s leather sandal feels like it was designed specifically for vacation outfits. The crossover strap design looks sleek and elevated, especially paired with a camp-collar shirt, linen pants, or matching resort set. It’s also surprisingly accommodating for wider feet, thanks to the open shape and generous fit through the forefoot.

What I like most is that the faux leather and polyurethane construction doesn’t come off plasticky or cheap-looking. Underfoot, the footbed has a smooth, slightly responsive feel that molds nicely as you walk, giving them a more supportive feel than your average flat sandal. It’s easy to pack and feel comfortable to wear for hours during tourist activities, which is not something I say about every sandal I’ve tested.

Maipo Explorer Sieve

Pros

  • Safeguard your feet against rocks, roots and debris
  • Breathable design
  • Flex-grooves in the midsole offer enhanced ground connection
  • Comfortable on rugged terrain

Cons

  • Not the most stylish of the bunch

Merrell’s closed-toe sandal is a great alternative that will safeguard your feet against rocks, roots and debris on the trail. The breathable design also has openings on the sides and at the heel to let water escape as you’re treading through rivers and creeks. I wore it during a wet hike, but its feet didn’t feel soggy after clocking serious mileage. The upper is made with breathable mesh and stretchy suede lining that conforms to the foot’s shape, reducing friction and the risk of blisters.

When I put on the sandal, there's a bungee lace system that allows you to tighten the fit without squeezing your foot to death. Inside, the EVA midsole feels cushy and comfortable enough to wear for hours, while the grooves in the rubber outsole provides lots of traction, preventing falls as I navigated slippery creek beds. The grippy rubber outsole keeps my feet firmly grounded. The gorpcore style won’t work with dressier fits, but it’s a true workhorse when it comes to taking on the great outdoors.

Pros

  • Minimal design pairs nicely with every fit possible
  • Leather feels smooth and less annoying than most thong styles
  • No crazy break-in period

Cons

  • A little pricey

Most thong sandals look good for about an hour before your feet start begging for mercy, but not the case with Todd Snyder’s version. It’s one of the rare pairs that actually stays comfortable along the boardwalk, cobblestone streets, and sightseeing tours. The leather-lined foam footbed gives it a softer, more supportive feel underfoot, while the stacked heel with a rubber core adds a little stability and shock absorption when you’re walking. Even the leather toe post feels smoother and less irritating than most flip-flop-style sandals.

Style-wise, this goes with everything: relaxed jeans, various shorts, and swim trunks. The stitch-and-turn construction is part of why they feel so flexible right out of the box: the leather is stitched inside out and then turned outward during production, which hides the seams and creates a cleaner finish with less stiffness against your foot. I didn’t have to break them in, I could wear them immediately. They barely take up any real space in my suitcase when I’m packing for a vacation either. The only downside is the refined leather construction makes them feel a little too polished for rough beach or pool use.

Danner Joseph Leather Sandal

joseph leather sandal

Pros

  • Polypropylene midsole is very supportive
  • Padded heel strap offers secure fit
  • Easy to put on and take off
  • This style can go with hiking gear or casual attire

Cons

  • Be mindful of sunburn and sharp objects

The next time you head out for a ride in the wild, your feet will thank you for putting them in Danner’s leather sandals. We have strapped these bad boys onto our feet and were impressed by how fit they are once the strap is tweaked and tightened, like a custom-made hug. We were also impressed by how tanky they are with a sturdy, extra grippy sole that has survived us kicking rocks, trudging through muddy rails, and dipping in shallow river water in them. Really, the outsole can survive an apocalypse.

But the real star of Danner’s sandals is the comfort. We tested out the PU (polyurethane) footbed it has and were amazed by how it molds to our feet to provide support that's borderline out of this world. We’re talking about cloud-like cushioning that will keep your underfoot and arch happy all day long in the wild. All in all, with these sandals, you shall conquer the mountain. Lastly, because style points should always be considered, we especially approve of the rugged dad style that is everyday-friendly and easy to work into your wardrobe.

How We Tested the Best Sandals for Men

The best sandals for men are versatile to excel in different settings, from casual wear in the city or around the neighborhood to navigating challenging terrains. At Men's Health, we tested sandals comprehensively as well as have spoken to a panel of experts in style, travel, and footwear (such as stylists, fashion designers, seasoned travelers, and podiatrists) to find the best sandals for men. Our testing team ventured through various environments in them—like sporting them to hike, raft, stroll by the beach, lounge by the pool, run errands, and attend casual events in summer—to see how each pair of sandals compared to each other.

Comfort Test

We meticulously evaluated the cushioning, arch support, and overall fit of each pair. We examined whether the straps or webbings cause friction against our skin, tried the fit right out of the box to see if they required breaking in or sizing up/down, and paid special attention to the footbed materials as well as the flexibility of the outsole to guarantee optimum comfort without compromising durability.

Traction Test

We rigorously examined the grip of the outsoles by wearing these sandals on a variety of terrains, anything from treacherous rocks and sandy beaches to wet, slippery pavements. We closely investigated how the sole’s lug patterns, materials, and depth worked together to offer grip on the ground before determining their traction level.

Durability Test

To see if the sandals provide solid grounding while being able to withstand extensive wear and tear, we evaluated the materials, stitching, and overall construction to feel how sturdy and balanced they are. The best sandals for men we’ve tested and selected have in fact survived exposure to abrasive surfaces as well as water immersion.

Versatility Test

More than just about style or whether this particular pair of sandals looks great with X, Y, or Z (though we certainly embraced options that are classic-looking), our versatility test is based upon performance and the activities each pair is suitable for. So we meticulously assessed whether the sandals can be worn for hiking, water sports, walking, casual everyday wear, etc. In addition, we scrutinized features—such as patented tech or specialized materials—to ensure they meet the demands of various outdoor pursuits.

How to Choose the Best Types of Sandals for Men?

To help you figure out the different types of sandals for your intended activities, we've broken them down below.

Slides

In general, slides, not unlike the ones you wear to shower, are great for lounging or hanging at the poolside. Recovery slides are a breed of sandals to be worn after workouts or sports to help relax muscles since they generally support the arch with good cushioning. These are generally recommended to be utilized for minimal walking activity.

Outdoors/Hiking Sandals

These often have a closed-toe design or at least have several durable strappings or webbings if they're open-toe, as seen in the Teva and Danner sandals featured above to protect the ankle, in addition to a durable outsole and a molded arch footbed.

Dress Sandals

While the dress sandals are often made of higher quality materials, and the ones we've tested here such as Todd Snyder and Cole Haan all fit and feel comfortable, we recommend them only for warm weather offer activities that don't require a lot of heavy walking.
