Margaritas are great, there’s a very good reason that they’re so popular – it’s a simple and delicious formula that will always be a good choice. But, why not shake things up a little (literally), and swap out your margarita this Cinco de Mayo for an amazing tequila cocktail that is just as easy and delicious, but a little bit different.
The Campanella is a variation on the classic Paloma cocktail – it combines reposado tequila with grapefruit juice, just like the classic, but the addition of the Italian Aperol adds the bold flavours of sweet orange balanced with a gentian bitterness. When you shake this up with some lime juice and a little honey – you are in Paloma cocktail heaven!
The classic Paloma cocktail is a Mexican favourite (Paloma being Spanish for “dove”), and is usually prepared using a grapefruit flavoured soda. However, much like most cocktails, I much prefer the Paloma cocktail prepared with fresh fruit juice and with just a splash of soda water to add the sparkle. The Campanella Paloma Cocktail Variation is no different!
In this Italian Paloma Cocktail we muddle a grapefruit wheel to release the fresh juices, then shake with smooth reposado tequila, Aperol, fresh lime juice, and honey. Strain into an old fashioned glass with ice, top up with a splash of soda water and garnish with a grapefruit wheel. It is so easy, and you can even swap out the honey for some agave nectar to make it a Paloma cocktail that vegans can enjoy too!
The gorgeous colour that combining Aperol and grapefruit juice gives this amazing Italian Paloma Cocktail just screams summer, especially along with the fresh, citrus flavours of grapefruit. Whether you are enjoy The Campanella instead of your usual Paloma Cocktail this Cinco de Mayo, or sipping all summer long, this is the perfect Paloma cocktail for everybody! Let’s get mixing!
